Belize

Belize is compact and easy to move around, Belize is located on the east coast of Central America on the Caribbean Sea. This tiny nation often gets overlooked, being more expensive than its immediate neighbors. So why go? Well, for a start, there's the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef-the longest in the Western Hemisphere -which offers some of the best diving in the world, and a boatload of other water sports worth getting wet for. Inland attractions include the world's only jaguar preserve, the largest network of limestone rainforest caves in the Americas, exciting rivers, a 1000ft jungle waterfall, pools and over 350 species of exotic birds and many animals. Another interesting phenomenon that makes Belize unique is the annual migration of whale sharks to the spectacular waters off the coast of Placencia. Whale Sharks are the biggest fish in the sea, they are gentle giants that feeds on planktons. Scuba diving with these wonderful creatures is an experience you can't afford to miss.

Over 35% of the country is protected in national parks and reserves - compared with a mere 25% in Costa Rica - including the world's only jaguar sanctuary at Cockscomb Basin, Settlement Day, one of the great Central American fiestas, celebrates the freedom of the Garifuna people. An intricate system of caves, explored by boat, inflated tube or on foot, drains the rivers of Mountain Pine Ridge. And in the pine-clad hills to the south, Caracol, one of Belize's many ruins and its largest, hides unexplored revelling in the widely believed but little-known fact that it once ruled over nearby Tikal. The list goes on...
